Do I need to get travel currency before I travel to India or Kenya? |
No. You can convert your currency in the international airports through several available money exchange though there rates are high. My suggestion is to get enough cash converted to cover a day or so. Just until you find a local bank or local money exchange that will give you a better rate. In India the exchange is horrible at the airport but the local money exchange where I visit in Bhubaneswar gives me a great rate. In Kenyan airports rates aren't that bad but the local bank gives a slightly better rate.
Also the higher the currency you exchange the better the rate. One hundred dollar bills are preferred. Make sure in Kenya you take $100 bills no older than 3 years. Money exchanges will not take bill older than 5 years old due to fraud. In India I haven't had any issues on age of $100 bills but better to be safe than sorry thousands of miles from home. |
Will my cellphone work in Kenya or India? |
Depends on your carrier. I find it's very expensive to use my cellphone in any country I travel to, no matter what my carrier tells me. You are charged every time your cellphone connects to a tower when you travel. I have heard horror stories of phone bills that are well over $1,500 for a few weeks of calls while traveling. To me its not worth the hassle and expense. Simply just get a new SIM card and international phone.
Getting a new SIM card in India or Kenya: To get a mobile phone connection in India or Kenya. Visit any of the many cellphone providers at the airport or retailers in markets. In India - Submit the required documents, such as two recent passport–sized photographs, a photocopy of your photo identity (Drivers’ License, Voter ID, PAN card, Passport) and a photocopy of the first page of your passport. These are required as proof of identity by the cell phone company. In Kenya - Submit registration card, passport and photocopy of the first page of your passport. These are required as proof of identity by the cell phone company. It was a lot simpler a few years back to get SIM cards in either countries but because of fraudulent activity both countries have take measures to prove identities of SIM card owners. |
